The Story Behind the Bean
Our Dominican coffee comes from the Ramirez Estate, a third-generation, family-owned farm that has transformed its land into one of the most environmentally and socially responsible coffee operations in the world. Before the Ramirez family bought the estate in the early 1990s, the land was barren and dry, with natural water springs long since dried up. Today, it thrives—producing exceptional coffee while caring for both the land and the people who work it.
The Ramirez Estate is more than just a coffee farm; it’s a model of sustainability. They recycle coffee cherry parts, converting them into natural gas that powers their facility, and they treat and reuse water in their processing, returning it to local water systems. Even cherry pulps, which are usually discarded, are repurposed as compost to nourish nearby farms.
But the Ramirez family’s impact extends far beyond the farm. By building schools in rural areas, they’ve made education accessible to children who once had to walk nearly 20 miles a day. They’ve donated books and computers, giving students the tools to learn and grow. The estate also opens its doors to other local farmers, offering them access to its state-of-the-art processing plant to help export their own coffee.
When you enjoy a cup from the Ramirez Estate, you're not only savoring some of the highest-scoring coffees we carry—you’re supporting a community of workers, families, and farmers who care deeply about the land, the future, and each other. The Ramirez family is humble, honest, and passionate about the coffee they produce, and their dedication is evident in every cup.
Sustainably grown. Community-driven. Exceptionally good.
